New site, bandwidth monitoring--increase, anyone?

Postby ktot » Thu Apr 29, 2010 12:35 am

SB has it sounding like Google mail is implemented now, with their new website.

Is it?

I today got the typical 90% full notice on one of my email accounts (well after the google/new website was up). Has SB just not removed that warning? I didn't want to let the account fill to 10 MB to find out as some emails I want could bounce if the 10 MB limit does in fact still exist via their monitoring software at least.

Second, I monitor my bandwidth usage closely. Never do audio or video, don't even download or upload photos, except late at night during the free time. Today I showed about four times my usual bandwidth usage. (Oh, yes--I have all updates set on manual and do them only after 10pm and have my firewall set to ask me everytime something new wants to access the Internet--to which I say no, generally. I am positive nothing I did caused that much bandwidth to be used today and I'm well protected against any sort of unwanted invasions.)

I'm wondering if this is part of the upgrade. Perhaps SB moved all our emails sitting on the servers (up to 10 accounts, 10 MB per account) and charged us with the bandwidth? That would account for near 100 MB extra showing in my usage today, at least.

Or is it possible SB has changed how they monitor bandwidth? I hope that's not the case.

Obviously I'll monitor the coming days, but I'd like to hear if anyone else noticed a big increase today.

Maybe do not use them for main accounts (which I agree with, though of late the emails have been pretty reliable), but SB has had the advantage of allowing POP downloads to multiple computers--a very valid reason I've stored a number of emails in my SB accounts for later downloads on other computers (while at the same time having numerous other email accounts on other ISP's servers, as my main accounts).

So... speak for yourself. You're thinking very narrowly. There has been a big advantage to SB's email, one that went away when my other location main ISP went to google mail, and now which I fear also may go away with SB with google mail as well. I'm sure SB won't announce any such thing so I'll just have to wait and see until I get to the other location to see what happens.

When I go to the new starband.net splash page, by the envelop with the big M I see 7gigbytes. That ought to be enough(?)

kind of an ugly interface. Even more cumbersome than Gmail

See it--yes. But when SB sends an email saying one is about to hit the limit of 10 MB, it's impossible to know which is in force now without trying to exceed the 10 MB limit, thus chancing having some important emails bounce.

SB needs to REMOVE the emails notifying 90% of the 10MB limit if that's no longer in effect. As of late yesterday, they had not.

7 GB sounds good, but is it in force or not? SB needs to remove the conflicting information.

I don't actually think it swapped over. Or it may be an advertising play on words. I get the same thing about my box over limits when somebody sends me something big. I even tried to change my settings to match what it says on the new page. Didn't work at all.

I was switched to gmail on 06-17-10. For the next 4 days my usage then spiked over the download limit. I am positive that we did not download anywhere near the limit. We were then punished with reduced speed. Tech support stated it was not possible for them to make mistake in the usage monitoring. I wholeheartedly contest this.

Update

I have a starband account at work and home. Both accounts on cluster 93 showed unexplainable usage spikes on 06-23, 24, 25-10. I was throttled at home for usage that was in error.
